Should you break into your long-term food storage to go camping?

Those of who like to camp know that the hardest part of camping isn’t finding a spot or dealing with the bugs. The hardest part is figuring out what you’re going to eat, storing that food, and cooking the meals. You have to know what you’re going to eat; you have to make sure that you have enough ice to keep everything fresh for as long as you’re going to be camping; and you have to be able to cook it all. It’s a major hassle. This has some people wondering, what if I took some of the food from my long-term storage to go camping with?

There are some who would warn against this. After all, the original idea behind long-term food storage is that it is a kind of insurance against something bad happening. If you for some reason lost power for an extended period of time, you would have food that wouldn’t require refrigeration and heat. But we would say otherwise. As with many useful things, there are several uses for long-term food storage, and we think that camping could be one of them.

Is long-term food storage good for camping?

As mentioned, trying to cook while camping is a pain. There are easier routes that aren’t ready-to-eat meals from long-term food storage. But those options are generally things like hot dogs and if you’re camping for more than one night, you’ll probably want something different at some point.

The meals that are found in long-term storage kits are a great solution to all the problems that cooking while camping creates. They don’t need to be kept cool, so ice is not a worry. They are easy and fast to making, requiring pretty much nothing but maybe some water. Plus, they give you plenty of options for meals, that way you don’t feel like you’re eating the same thing over and over again.

There are people who would argue that this is a wasteful use of your long-term storage, but we don’t think so. Ready-to-eat meals are not a limited resource, it’s plenty easy to replenish anything that you may have taken out. Not only that, but most long-term storage kits come with a lot of meals in one kit. And these meals are designed to be high in calories, which means that they are very filling. So, it’s not like you’re going to be completely emptying out your long-term storage. When you also consider that long-term food storage has a limited (albeit, long) shelf life, it seems wasteful not to use it.

So, should you use long-term food storage to go camping? We think so. But it’s also your long-term food storage. You get to decide what you want to do with them. If you want to take them camping, great! If you want to hold on to them for the peace of mind they provide, that’s also great! It’s up to you. Check out some of our other food storage solutions!
