Reasons for Having Long Term Food Storage

If you’re the average US citizen, you might be good at keeping your kitchen restocked with canned goods, dried goods, fruits and veggies, frozen items, and more. What most people lack is long-term food, at least not as it is defined today. I’m sure we can all remember the start of the pandemic, when stores ran out of almost all canned and storage shelf foods. Later, we saw the same thing happen in Texas as storms knocked out all power.

Here are the reasons we believe that long term food storage is a powerful tool to have in today’s age and why you should be prepared for anything to come.

Reasons to Store Long Term Food Storage

Grocery Store Supplies

Here’s the thing about grocery stores. The first is that the back storeroom’s goods were insufficient to completely refill the shelves. Furthermore, the business was based on semi-trucks that made deliveries every few days to keep what was in stock.

We’ve witnessed this system’s failure on several occasions and may not have noticed. People would come to the store in droves during a severe storm and stock up on food and other necessities.

The cabinets would be restocked, but the stockroom contents would be depleted very quickly. The store was unable to be resupplied on time due to the bad storm, so shipping was delayed.

The end result was a lot of empty shelves that were cleared out in only one day by consumers. The lesson is that you can’t count on obtaining all of your food from a store after an emergency strikes.

Food Supplies at Home

Did you know that the typical person’s home food supply lasts only two weeks at best, and that pre-emergency food preparation plans are necessary?

Until I started asking people I knew how often they shopped and how much food they had at home, it seemed preposterous. Each year, there are a number of disasters, and nearly all of them have the potential to cause long-term effects, which would require long term food storage.

Just look at 2020 for example.

People were asked to stay at home for weeks on end. Some people were ready for it, but many weren’t. The situation may strike without notice, leaving us unable to access outside resources and compelled to survive on what we have at home.

Garden Issues

I’m into gardening and believe that everyone who has the financial means should cultivate their own food. Gardening is a healthy way to obtain nutrients, and it is beneficial in many other ways. It’s another way for us to obtain food in an emergency, but not necessarily long term food storage.

There are several disadvantages to gardening.

Some people may not have the required space or money for a garden, so they may miss out on this opportunity. There are also outside elements that can have an effect on a garden’s yield, such as weather, droughts, pests, and disease. I don’t want to dissuade you from gardening, but I don’t believe it should be a person’s only source of nourishment.

Hunting and Fishing

There’s a lot of discussion in the outdoor and survival communities about how to feed oneself during a major catastrophe.

Hunting and fishing for food are frequently mentioned.

But what people seem to forget is that you are not the only one who has it. The population of the United States is around 330 million people.

When a calamity affects that many individuals, the population of animals and fish will not last long.

Inflation and Unemployment

They may not be seen as genuine emergencies, yet inflation and losing a job can severely damage a person’s budget and capacity to support their family. When things are good, it is wise to invest in actual items that can assist you later when times get tough.

Your food budget got really tight, but because you had a sufficient supply of emergency food, the high cost of going to the store didn’t bother you so much.

Long Term Food Storage Options

If a disaster occurs, you’ll need options for every part of your strategy: shelter, water, medicine, and food. Having only one approach to address a want in an emergency isn’t preparedness and will just put you in a perilous scenario.

There are many ways to be prepared to take care of your food needs during an emergency such as gardening, hunting, fishing, foraging for wild edibles, storing canned goods, canning garden crops, and purchasing long term food storage survival kits.

Long Term Food Storage Benefits

Lastly, I like the benefits that long term foods provide, such as:

  • Food that can remain good for decades
  • A variety of different foods are offered
  • They taste good
  • They are protected in sealed pouches as well as in buckets
  • They are easy to store and maintain
  • They are convenient to transport whether that be in a bucket or by packing several pouches into a bag

Final Thoughts

There’s no way to know what the future holds. “You never know,” is often my answer when people ask about various outcomes of possible emergencies.

We may not know what will happen, but we can be as prepared as possible because we do not know what may occur. In terms of food, this entails covering all bases in terms of collecting, processing, and storing it.

This is why one of the best things to invest in is, long term food storage packages.

When it comes to your budget, I propose acquiring some long-term food and storing it with your emergency supplies since you don’t know when you’ll need it. It may come in handy one day.
