How to Plan With A 2 Week Emergency Food Supply

Why have a 2 week emergency food supply on-hand?

Having a well-stocked cupboard is critical to creating a 2 week emergency food supply for the next natural disaster. Creating an emergency supply list is an excellent method to get yourself and your family ready for the next flood, hurricane, epidemic, tornado, or earthquake. It’s also useful when you’ve had a financial crisis that prevented you from going to the store.

You can start by preparing 72-hour kits, then moving onto 2 week, 4 week kits. Slowly building into short term and long term food storage supplies.

If you and your family need to prepare for two weeks or more of meals, pay close attention to nutritional demands. Prepare food stockpiles so that everyone may enjoy at least one well-balanced meal each day.

Add to the total number of easy meals you keep on hand. If you rummage through your cupboards, you may discover a two-week emergency food supply of most necessities. So before you go shopping, make a list of everything you already have.

Write a plan for a 2 week emergency food supply

  • Make a list of all family members by name and include any special needs like diabetes and allergies.
  • List all staple foods on your shelves now.
  • List all foods in your freezer.
  • Make a list of meals to be served for each day for 14 days.

Create a 2 week emergency food supply plan

To make a two-week supply of food, you’ll need 14 dinners, 14 lunches, 14 breakfasts, and 28 snacks/treats. I keep it really basic by rotating all of my meals. So instead of planning for four days at a time, I just rely on the previous days’ meals.

You may need to modify your schedule based on your family’s needs and situations. Begin by making a list of meals. Next, draw a circle around the 4-6 meals your family always eats. Make a list of all of the things you’ll need for each meal (not to mention seasonings) and then make your shopping list.

Over the next few weeks, add to your pantry little by little until you have a total of 14 days’ worth of food. You’ll be surprised at how inexpensive it is to do it this way if you space out and look for sales.

Don’t forget to put some goodies and meals in your survival food supply. Sugar (hello dark chocolate!) can make all the difference when you’re stressed and anxious.

If this sounds like a lot, purchasing already made food storage supplies is the easiest and one of the best options to have. Here at Targa, we hold endless options of 2 week emergency food supply.

Don’t forget about water

The typical rule of thumb is that you’ll need 1 gallon of water per person per day in an emergency. If you have a big family, this could get expensive fast! People typically consume around 1/2 gallon each day and require 1/2 gallon for food preparation, sanitation, and cleaning.

You’ll need additional water if you consume different meals or live in a hotter region.

Don’t forget the non-food items you’ll need in an emergency

When it comes to preparing for an emergency, food and water should come first, but there are several other things that may make your life much simpler.

Do you have enough toilet paper, soap, trash bags, and feminine products stored away? What about hand sanitizer?

Other things you must consider include the nature of your risks and then prepare accordingly.
